Introduction: Achieving Excellence in O/L ICT
The G.C.E. Ordinary Level ICT subject is one of the most rewarding basket subjects for students in Sri Lanka. Scoring an 'A' grade (75 marks and above) is well within reach if you adopt a disciplined approach that balances foundational theory with practical application.
The Two Examination Papers Explained
Paper 1: 40 Multiple Choice Questions (1 Hour)
Paper 1 tests quick recall, definition clarity, and simple calculations across the entire Grade 10 and Grade 11 textbook content. To score above 36/40:
- Be crystal clear on hardware input/output/storage categorizations.
- Practice binary-to-decimal and decimal-to-binary conversions thoroughly.
- Know standard file extensions (e.g., .docx, .xlsx, .png, .mp4, .html).
Paper 2: Structured and Essay Paper (2 Hours)
Paper 2 carries 60% of the total examination mark. The first question is a compulsory structured question with multiple sub-parts, followed by 4 questions to be chosen from 5 optional topics.
High-Yield Focus Areas for Guaranteed Marks
1. Spreadsheet Applications (Excel / Calc)
Almost every year, an entire question is dedicated to spreadsheet formulas. Memorize the exact syntax for:
- =SUM(A1:A10) – Calculates the total of a cell range.
- =AVERAGE(B1:B10) – Computes the arithmetic mean.
- =MAX(C1:C10) and =MIN(C1:C10) – Identifies highest and lowest values.
- =COUNT(D1:D10) vs =COUNTA(D1:D10) – Number of numeric cells vs non-empty cells.
- =IF(condition, value_if_true, value_if_false) – Logical conditional evaluation.
- Absolute vs Relative Cell Referencing: Know when to use $A$1 to lock row and column positions when copying formulas.
2. Algorithms, Flowcharts and Pseudocode
Visualizing step-by-step logic is an essential computational skill:
- Terminal (Oval): Start and Stop.
- Input/Output (Parallelogram): Read user input or display output.
- Process (Rectangle): Calculations or variable assignments (e.g., Total = A + B).
- Decision (Diamond): Condition with True/False branching paths.
3. Basic HTML Web Development
Be comfortable writing clean HTML markup without relying on an editor:
- Document structure: <!DOCTYPE html>, <html>, <head>, <title>, <body>.
- Text formatting: <h1> to <h6>, <p>, <br>, <strong>, <em>.
- Links and images: <a href="url">text</a> and <img src="image.jpg" alt="description">.
- Lists: Ordered (<ol>) and Unordered (<ul>) with list items (<li>).
- Tables: <table>, <tr>, <th>, <td>.
